PINCHUK PLUG POST : My frequent co-panelist, the mutli-talented Yehudi Mercado, has been madly producing all-ages comics this year. He’s got ROCKET SALVAGE and SCI-FU veering into orbit soon, but if you want to roll closer to Earth, his coffee-table sized ode to mischief and mayhem, PANTALONES, TX, is already out and available.
With the subtitle, “Don’t Chicken Out!”, the book’s about Chico Bustamante, a very Bart Simpson-like middle school troublemaker who’s always driving doughnuts in the dirt around no-nonsense Texas Sheriff Cornwallis. Of course, these shenanigans are happening in the town of Pantalones — a wacky, funhouse mirror of the Texas Yehudi grew up in — so their SMOKEY ‘N THE BANDIT chases inevitably escalate with the arrival of Cornwalis’ colossal pet chicken.
Now… Chico’s made it his mission to steal that chicken and ride it ‘cross the desert.
It’s clean-but-still-naughty fun I’d slot right alongside REGULAR SHOW and GRAVITY FALLS. If you’d like it bite-sized, Yehudi put a spooktacular PTX short together as a free Halloween ComicsFest sampler last year that pits Chico and his pals against an infectious, candy-striped Zombiñata. It scared the hell out of me, even as I grinned with whimsical delight.
